WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- Makes a large batch to serve the whole family.
- Is great for breakfast or a dessert.
- Easy ingredients help these come together in no time.
INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST):
All-purpose flour
Baking soda
Salt
Nutmeg
Egg
Granulated sugar
Sour cream
Canola or vegetable oil, for frying
Powdered sugar
Milk
Vanilla Extract
HOW TO MAKE OLD FASHIONED DONUTS, STEP BY STEP:
- Using a sifter, sift the flour, baking soda, salt and nutmeg, over a medium bowl three times.
- In a large bowl, whisk the egg until it becomes a solid yellow color. Stir in the sugar and sour cream, mixing until they are well blended.ย
- Gradually stir in the flour mixture, until it forms a soft dough. Use a rubber spatula or wooden spoon to stir the mixture together until it forms into a ball. (You can add an additional Tablespoon of sour cream if it is too dry)
- Cover the ball of dough in plastic wrap, and place in the refrigerator, for at least 30 minutes. (You can also prepare the dough the night before so it will be ready in the morning)
- Once the dough is chilled, roll the dough out quickly to ยฝ-inch in thickness. You can cut the dough with a donut cutter, or use two round cookie cutters, one small and one medium size.ย
- Line a plate or baking sheet with paper towels, set aside.
- Add about 2 inches of oil to a heavy bottom pot. Heat the oil to 375 degrees F, fry the cut dough in hot oil about 2 minutes per side until golden on both sides. Remove from the oil and place on paper towels to let the oil drain and the donuts to cool.
- To make your glaze in a bowl whisk together all the glaze ingredients.
- Dip the donuts into the glaze until coated, place onto a wire rack with a baking sheet underneath to let the glaze set.
- Serve and enjoy!
DO I HAVE TO USE A DONUT CUTTER?
If you plan on making donuts often, then I highly suggest a donut cutter. They are inexpensive and really help.
But if you do not have a donut cutter you can use two round biscuit cutters, one larger and one smaller to cut out the center.
You can also freehand them too.
CAN I USE ANOTHER GLAZE?
While we are keeping it classic on this Old Fashioned Donut Recipe, you can switch up the glaze if you’d like.
Some of our other favorite types of glaze include:
- Chocolate
- Maple
- Lemon
- Rum
- Almond
If you still want to use the glaze recipe that we have, you can easily switch up the flavor by using any other extract.
WHAT IS THE BEST TEMPERATURE FOR THE OIL?
Be sure to have the oil at 375 degrees F before placing a donut in the oil to cook.
If the oil is not hot enough, the donut will take longer to cook and will absorb some of the oil. If the oil is too hot, it can burn the donut.ย
CAN I MAKE THE DOUGH AHEAD OF TIME?
Yes, since these need to chill anyways you can make the dough ahead of time as well to use another time.
We recommend storing the dough for no longer than 24 hours.
HOW TO STORE:
These are best eaten the first day, but you can store these Old Fashioned Donuts in an airtight container on the countertop or in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
These can also be frozen. Wrap each of your donuts in plastic wrap and then place in a freezer container or bag.
They will keep frozen for up to 3 months. To defrost, remove from the freezer to the countertop or the refrigerator until thawed.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- You can easily double this recipe to serve more people.
- These can be frozen, see above on how to do that.
- Other glaze flavors can be used, see some ideas above.
- You can make the dough 1 day ahead of time and store it in the refrigerator.
- We suggest using a donut cutter, but you can use biscuit cutters as well.
