My aunt is from Japan and she had taught me this recipe and I’m the only person in the family that can even come close to recreating her recipe. Now technically people would ask how this is “fried” rice when the recipe isn’t technically fried.
Well I’m not sure how I can answer that question, on that that I know this is how she made it and this is what she called it, so we are going to stick with Easy Fried Rice for now.
HOW DO YOU MAKE FRIED RICE?
There are so many different variations and directions that there is no right or wrong way to make fried rice. Usually you start out with a large skillet or wok and add some oil and sauté your veggies/meat etc. Then you are to add your cooked rice. In this recipe we don’t fry our rice, but everything else is fried.
WHICH RICE IS BEST FOR FRIED RICE?
We use long grain white rice for our recipe. You can use medium or long grain white rice, some people like my mother use brown rice for their recipes. The long grain produces a fluffier rice that doesn’t stick together unlike sushi rice which will give a slightly different texture and flavor.
Like stated above this recipe is completely adaptable. We usually use onions, carrots, chicken, spam (yes we love our spam) and eggs for our rice. Add a little salt and pepper and it’s as simple as that.
You can add peas, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, etc. This recipe really is adaptable and you can add flavors to your liking. I used to make this for some of my coworkers who liked to add soy sauce, I on the other hand am not the biggest soy sauce fan.
