If you love easy and classic then you need to whip up my French Onion Dip! With only 6 ingredients and 5 minutes, this recipe couldn’t be more simple.
I love dips, I really really do! They are one thing that I always gravitate towards when I’m at a party, or I make during game day. It’s just one of those things you know.
This French Onion Dip has been the way I’ve been making my dip for years, my mom passed down her recipe to me and I switched it up a little bit to fit my flavor profile.
This is such a classic dip and everyone does theirs just a little bit different but trust me on this one, this French Onion Dip is one of the best appetizers around!
We can’t get enough, it’s just so easy to make and that is a huge part in why I love making this because there is just mixing involved and no baking or waiting around.
I hate waiting for recipes, I’m kind of impatient like that, but I mean I will, but some of the easiest recipes and minimal ingredient ones are honestly the best.
Some other favorite dips that I have on my site include Roasted Red Pepper Hummus, Charleston Cheese Dip and my all time fave Stuffed Mushroom Dip!
WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- It only uses 6 ingredients.
- It is ready in 5 minutes.
- You can easily double it to serve more people!
You really can’t get any better than a classic like this French Onion Dip Recipe, seriously. It’s been one of my favorite dips even when I was a kid believe it or not!
My kids also eat this up, I’m lucky they are onion lovers or I don’t know what I would do! But with all the other flavors mixed in it really is just a delicious dip and you can’t tell a real potent onion flavor anyways.
We like to eat this with potato chips, vegetables, crackers, pita bread, etc. It really goes well with anything that you would normally use as a dipping device.
HOW TO MAKE FRENCH ONION DIP, STEP BY STEP:
- In a small bowl, combine the sour cream, chopped onion, onion powder, garlic salt, pepper and 1 Tablespoon of the fresh chives.
- Stir until thoroughly combined.
- Place in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to marry.
- Top with remaining 1 Tablespoon fresh chives before serving.
How much simpler can you get than this, seriously? I know that there are french onion dips out there that actually fry down their onions until they are caramelized.
That is a little too much work for me, although it tastes amazing, I like the simpler version that we have been using for many many years and I rarely stray from this one.
It’s not that I don’t like others, I do! I just really like how we have been making it and once you find that perfect combination you tend to just stick with it if you know what I mean!
WHAT IS FRENCH ONION DIP?
If you have never heard of French Onion Dip before, now is a great time to learn and try it out. It is an American based dip that is typically based with sour cream and onion.
People add different seasonings to it to make it their own, but the base of the recipe usually stays the same. It is also typically served with potato chips.
You can just see the seasonings in the dip, so you know it has to be good! I love testing out different seasonings because you never really know until you try what you will like.
Like I mentioned before, I got this recipe from my mother years ago and we have tweaked it to become our own and added some of the stuff that we though complemented the dip the best.
We love serving this French Onion Dip Recipe at holiday gatherings, picnics, football games, or any time just because. It is one of those dips you know will go fast.
At least with us it does, there usually isn’t any left when we serve it, which is good, but sometimes I like a little leftover for me to just indulge in.
Another secret that I love is to spread this on sandwiches, have you ever tried a French Onion Burger? Wow, talk abut a burst of flavor, and no I’m not joking.
HOW TO STORE:
Since this recipe is sour cream based it needs to be kept refrigerated when not serving. This is a cold dip, there are some out there that are warm dips.
So this can sit at room temperature or a period of time since it is refrigerated before hand. But to store it for later consumption, cover your serving bowl with plastic wrap and place in refrigerator and it should stay good for up to 4-7 days.
But I highly doubt unless you make a really large batch of this that you will be needing to refrigerate longer than a day because it will be gone in no time.
When it comes to dips there is nothing better than a delicious French Onion Dip. This I swear to you is one classic dip recipe, you know its classic when they start selling it at the stores.
There are other dips that are less than traditional that they don’t sell at stores. But with this dip I would much prefer to make it myself then buy it, so much cheaper too!
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- We like to refrigerate this for at least 30 minutes before serving, but can be served right away if necessary.
- You can use chives or green onions in this recipe.
- This can easily be doubled to make a larger batch.
- Traditionally this is served with potato chips but see above for some of my other serving options.
- You can absolutely tweak the seasonings to your liking.
- This makes about 1 cup.
If you want that perfect dip recipe, look no further! You have to whip up this French Onion Dip ASAP, everyone will love it.
