- Stir together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt in a large mixing bowl.
- Add the egg, sour cream, milk, 1 tablespoon melted butter, vanilla, and ground cinnamon to the dry ingredients and whisk until well combined with no dry patches.
- Transfer the batter into a piping bag and snip off the tip. Pipe the mini donut batter into the prepared pan, making sure each donut mold gets about โ full. You should get 15 donuts out of this batter
- Place the pan in the oven and bake for 8-9 minutes, or until they’re lightly browned and a toothpick can be inserted into the center and comes out clean.
- While the mini donuts are baking, in a medium-sized mixing bowl, stir together the sugar and cinnamon for the donut coating.
- When the donuts are finished baking, remove them from the oven and take the donuts out of the pan while they’re still hot. Working one by one, lightly brush some of the remaining melted butter on the outside of the mini baked donut. Then quickly and immediately place the butter brushed donut into the cinnamon sugar mixture and toss it around to coat.
- Repeat this process with the remaining donuts, and serve immediately.
WHAT IS THE SIZE OF A MINI DONUT?
These Mini Donuts are 1 1/2 inches in diameter. Cinnamon Sugar Mini Donuts that are this size can burn easily, so be careful and keep an eye on them as they bake.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CAKE AND YEAST DONUT?
Cake donuts are like this Mini Donut recipe, they have a leavening agent in them, while yeast donuts use yeast.
Yeast donuts require more time to rise before you bake or fry them and cake donuts can be popped in the oven to bake, or fry in no time.
WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A PIPING BAG?
I find it is easiest to add the donut batter to the donut pan using a piping bag. However, if you don’t have one, there are a few other workarounds.
You can simply use a plastic ziploc bag and snip off a corner to create your own. You can also just add the batter using two spoons to fill the pan, but piping is the easiest way in my opinion.
CAN I MAKE OTHER FLAVORS?
Absolutely! If you are not a fan of cinnamon sugar there are other variations that you can do! Some ideas include:
- Powdered sugar
- Chocolate icing
- Powdered sugar icing
- Plain
- White chocolate
There are so many different icings etc that you can use, just do what you like best!
HOW TO STORE:
These Mini Cinnamon Sugar Donuts are best eaten warm and on the same day that you make them but will keep for 3 days at room temperature on the counter in an airtight container.
These can be frozen but I suggest not tossing in the cinnamon sugar before you place them in a freezer safe bag or container where they will keep for up to 2 months.
To defrost, remove to the countertop over night until thawed. To warm them back up, I suggest popping them back in the oven or microwave until they’re warmed through again. Then if rewarming from frozen, toss in the cinnamon sugar.
