With cake mix, applesauce, water and chocolate chips it makes this not only simple but super tasty.
My kids absolutely love making this Chocolate Chip Mug Cake, we always have the ingredients around and it’s perfect since they don’t have to use the oven.

INGREDIENTS NEEDED (FULL RECIPE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE POST):
Yellow cake mix
Water
Applesauce
Milk chocolate chips
Optional garnishes: whipped cream, frosting, sprinkles, chocolate syrup or ice cream
HOW TO MAKE A CHOCOLATE CHIP MUG CAKE, STEP BY STEP:
- Spray the inside of an 8-ounce microwave safe mug with non-stick cooking spray. Add the cake mix, water and, applesauce.
- Stir the ingredients together until smooth.
- Add in your chocolate chips and stir until incorporated. The add a few more chocolate chips to the top.
- Place in the microwave and cook at full power for 1 minute.
- Remove from the microwave and allow the cake to cool slightly
- Garnish with whip cream, frosting, sprinkles, chocolate syrup or ice cream if desired and serve.
WHAT SIZE MUG DO I NEED TO USE?
You will want to make sure that you are using at least an 8-ounce mug for this recipe.
The cake will puff up in the mug almost looking like it will flow over, but when it is done cooking it will deflate slightly.
CAN I USE ANOTHER CHOCOLATE CHIP?
Yes! We use milk chocolate chips for this mug cake, but you can use semi-sweet, dark or even white chocolate chips if you’d like.
WHAT CAN I USE IF I DO NOT HAVE APPLESAUCE?
If you do not have applesauce readily available you can substitute it with 1 Tablespoon oil and then use 2 Tablespoons water instead of 1.
CAN I ADD ANY OTHER MIX-INS TO THIS CHOCOLATE CHIP MUG CAKE?
The beauty of this recipe is that it is really versatile and you can add other things to the batter! Some of our favorites that we have used include:
- Sprinkles
- Chopped nuts
- Dried fruit
- Toffee bits
- Chopped candy bars
- Crushed Oreos
- Peanut butter chips
- Butterscotch chips
The list is endless, the cake itself can really have any of your favorite mix-ins that you like, you can even omit the chocolate chips and completely replace it with something else.
HOW TO STORE:
While we think that Mug Cakes are best eaten when they come directly out of the microwave, you can store them.
Place cake covered in the refrigerator where it will keep for up to 24 hours. To reheat place it in the microwave again for 15-30 seconds until heated through.
We do not recommend freezing.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- We have not tried making this in the oven, so we are not sure how it would turn out.
- You can add so many mix-ins to your batter, see above for some ideas.
- Use any of your favorite chocolate chips for this recipe.
- You can use sweetened or unsweetened applesauce.
- If you do not have applesauce you can replace it with 1 Tablespoon oil and 2 Tablespoons of water.
- This can be garnished with lots of things including ice cream, chocolate drizzle, sprinkles, whipped cream, etc.
