Want a quick and easy hand held dessert that everyone loves? With only 5 ingredients and 15 minutes youโll have these delicious Cherry Hand Pies.
Raise your hand if you were a fan of the Little Debbie Fruit Pies as a kid. I know I was. They were one of my go to treats for when my sweet tooth called.
These Cherry Hand Pies really bring me back to my childhood and make me feel like a kid again, even know it it totally a grown up dessert as well!
Pies themselves are one of my favorite things, who doesn’t like a little slice of heaven? Some of my favorite pies include Coconut Cream Pie, Peach Pie and Strawberry Pie.
WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- With only 5 ingredients they are super easy whip up.
- You can use any kind of pie filling that you like.
- You can double this recipe easily to feed all the people.
In the past we have made so many different versions of these Hand Pies. Blueberry, Lemon, Strawberry, Key Lime, Peach, etc.
They are SOOOOOO simple and that is what we like best about them. They are kind of like pop-tarts as my. kids refer to them as.
While we usually top ours with decorators or turbinado sugar you can also make a powdered sugar glaze and dip them in that as well.
Do you want to know how to make these Cherry Hand Pies? Because I’m getting ready to tell you, and I cant stress enough how simple it really is.
HOW TO MAKE CHERRY HAND PIES, STEP BY STEP:
- Unroll your pie crusts onto cutting board and using a 4″ biscuit cutter cut out circles in your crust.
- Place on parchment paper lined baking sheet and top with about 1 Tablespoon of cherry pie filling.
- Fold pie circles in half and crimp endless with fork to seal, some of the filling might come out, but this is okay.
- In small bowl whisk together your egg and water.
- Brush each hand pie with egg wash until completely coated.
- Sprinkle with your sugar and poke a fork into the center to vent and then bake at 425 degrees F for 15 minutes until golden brown.
See I told you that was simple didn’t I? You really need to make these Hand Pies immediately. Cherry is my favorite pie flavor so we always default to this one.
While my kids are kinda split on which flavors they like, I think they really do agree with me most of the time.
You can also make these with jam if you like, then they would really be more pop-tart like as well, but we have used jam in a pinch when we don’t have any pie filling and it works perfectly fine.
There really isn’t much thinking that you you need to do with this recipe besides what flavor you want to make, also you can use a homemade pie crust if you prefer.
HOW TO STORE:
Hand Pies can usually be stored at room temperature covered in Saran Wrap for about 2 days, after that you can move then to the refrigerator where they will keep for about another 2 days.
CAN I FREEZE HAND PIES?
Yes you can! These are best frozen before baking, so if you are wanting to make a bunch at a time and bake some up but have some for later use this would be perfect.
Once you crimp your edges with the fork, place them on a parchment paper line sheet and place in freezer, once frozen remove to a ziptop bag.
When you are ready bake just let them defrost slightly and then pop into oven and bake as directed.
These hand held treats are just super fun to whip up. My kids love doing the cutting of the pie dough circles, we have a multi size biscuit set that we use for these and use the 4″ one.
If you have larger biscuit cutters you can also use those, they will make less but obviously they will be bigger in then end and might require a tad bit more cooking time to get golden.
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- You can use refrigerated pie crust or homemade.
- You can use any pie filling that you’d like, we went with cherry for this recipe.
- This makes about 12-14 if you roll out your dough scraps and use up the remainder.
- You can top with decorators sugar or turbinado sugar or make a powdered sugar glaze to dip them in after they are done cooking.
- It’s ok to have some of the filling ooze out when you are crimping.
- We try to use about 1 Tablespoonful of the filling in the center for 4″ circles.
If you are looking for a fun and easy recipe that you can easily double or freeze, then these Cherry Hand Pies are exactly what you’ve been looking for.

These were easy and fun to make. I used Comstock Cherry filling and made my own pie crust. I used a small bowl to cut the circles in the dough. I made them for a concert in the park picnic. They were a hit. Will definitely make again.
