Spice Cookies, what can I say? They are absolutely delicious, they are easy to whip up, they are one of my favorite cookies of all time?
There is just so much that I can say about this cookie recipe that I could write a book about them, but I won’t I promise! I just want to let you know that they are amazing.
We have been making these cookies for generations as they have been passed down in one off my grandmothers old handwritten cookbooks and I find those recipes sometimes to be the best,
Obviously over the years we have tweaked this Spice Cookie Recipe to fit our liking and to get with the times but the basic ingredients and flavor has always remained the same regardless.
If you are fan of cookies, and holiday cookies then these Spice Cookies are what you are going to want to have on your holiday dessert tray this year hands down.
Some of our other favorite holiday cookie recipes that we have on our site include Chocolate Chocolate Chip Cookies, Butterscotch Oatmeal Crinkle Cookies and Caramel Chocolate Thumbprint Cookies.
We just adore cookies around here and we make them all year long, but some are special just for the holiday season and these Spice Cookies we love to bake this time of year!
WHY THIS RECIPE WORKS:
- With pantry staple ingredients you can make these up in a flash.
- You can easily double this recipe to make more of halve it to make less.
- They are a really good gift giving cookie during the holidays or any time.
When we do our cookie exchanges these Spice Cookies are ones that I’ve always gotten rave reviews on so we keep adding them to our cookie plates.
We like to go around and give cookie plates to the elderly around town, and they really appreciate it and I always get the comment that they remember these cookies from their childhood!
HOW TO MAKE SPICE COOKIES, STEP BY STEP:
- In a large bowl, use an electric mixer to blend the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, corn syrup and vanilla extract and beat on low speed until well combined.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, cloves, baking powder and baking soda. Set aside.
- Add the dry ingredients and mix just until they are well incorporated. If needed, you can add a few drops of water just until the mixture so the dough comes together.
- Form one inch dough balls and roll in the coarse sugar.
- Place evenly apart on the prepared baking sheet and flatten slightly.
- Bake for 12 minutes or until the edges turn golden brown. Place on cooling rack until completely cooled.
See how easy these Spice Cookies are? There really isn’t anything to them and that is what I love about some of these old time recipes, that they are simple but taste amazing.
So I love spice cake, and these are similar in flavor the main spices that this recipe includes are:
- Cinnamon
- Ginger
- Nutmeg
- Cloves
With those spices mixed together, you really can’t go wrong at all. That is why we love these cookies so much, they are not overpowering in flavor at all.
They really have a nice subtle balance of flavor but also you can taste everything at the same time which makes them one of my favorite and best tasting cookies around!
We like to finish off these Spice Cookies with some sparking decorators sugar, not only does it make them look beautiful it gives another sweet aspect to them as well.
HOW TO STORE:
- ROOM TEMP: To store these cookies at room temperature let cookies cool fully, once cookies are cooled store in an airtight container like a ziploc bag, they should keep for 3-4 days..
- REFRIGERATOR: The same as above, I donโt really recommend refrigerating them they tend to dry out and they will last the same time as if you were to store at room temperature.
- FREEZE DOUGH: Make dough per recipe, line a baking sheet with parchment paper and using a cookie scoop drop your dough next to one another and place in freezer until solid, then remove and place in ziploc bags, the dough will keep around 3 months.
- FREEZE BAKED COOKIES: To freeze baked cookies, let them fully cool then place on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet and freeze. Once frozen, remove to freezer bags and place in freezer, they should keep around 3 months.
When you are looking to bake frozen cookie dough balls, let sit out at room temp for about 30 minutes before baking. As all as defrosting already baked cookies, let them come to room temp for same amount of time.
This is the reason why we like to make a lot of these cookies this time of year is that we can easily freeze them and defrost them when we are ready to serve.
We are those people that love to keep baked goods frozen for later use and cookies are one of those recipes that do well with that.
Now that you’ve seen a little bit of these Spice Cookies, I hope you area already falling in love, because you really really should. I promise you they are amazing.
These were one of my grandmas favorite recipes, and as a kid I just remember having them at our Christmas gatherings and I couldn’t stop eating them.
You’d think as a kid you wouldn’t think you would like anything with the word “spice” in a sweet recipe. Thanks goodness my mom forced me to try them.
My motto in life is “try everything once, twice if if I like it”. I’m one of those people that like to give most things a chance, and I’m so happy I did that with these Spice Cookies!
TIPS AND TRICKS:
- If you can’t find sparking decorators sugar you can use regular sugar to roll these in.
- You can also try different colors of decorators sugar to give it some holiday flair.
- These can be frozen, see my tips above.
- The dough on these cookies are slightly drier than most, so add some water in at the end so it comes together, it will say that in the instructions.
- Do not over bake, you want slightly golden edges when you take out, they will keep cooking once removed from oven and will produce a crispy outside and a soft inside.
If you want a cookie that is old-fashioned and will bring back memories for a lot of people then you need to whip up these Spice Cookies, you will love them.
