Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1/2 cup warm milk
  • 1 Tbs active dry yeast
  • 2 Tbs coconut oil melted
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 Tbs brown sugar
  • 3 1/2 - 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 Cup baking soda plus enough water to fill a large pot 3 inches
  • 2-3 Tbs butter melted
  • Coarse sea salt

Instructions

  • In the bowl of a stand mixer combine water, milk, yeast, coconut oil, salt, brown sugar and about half of the flour.
  • Mix well using a dough hook attachment. You could also use a large bowl and wooden spoon/ your hands.
  • Gradually add remaining flour. Dough should be slightly sticky but not stick to your fingers.
  • Knead dough for 3-4 minutes.
  • Place dough in a large lightly greased bowl and cover with saran wrap.
  • Allow dough to rise for about 1 hour. It should double in size.
  • Remove dough from bowl and knead a few more times.
  • Form an evenly shaped ball and cut into 8 equally sized pieces.
  • Roll each dough ball into a strip about 1 inch in diameter.
  • Cut the strip into 6-8 equally sized pieces.
  • Prepare a baking soda bath by boiling water in a large stock pot and then SLOWLY add ½ cup baking soda.
  • Place each pretzel piece into the bath for about 30 seconds.
  • Remove from the bath and place on parchment lined baking sheets.
  • Use a basting brush to brush butter onto each pretzel piece and then sprinkle salt sea salt onto pieces.
  • Bake at 400 degrees Fahrenheit for 10-12 minutes.
  • Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce and enjoy!

Notes

  1. When placing the baking soda in water bath do it slowly as it really starts to bubble.
  2. You can easily double this batch to have and serve more.
  3. These can be frozen, see my tips above on how to do that.
  4. You can make these in the air fryer, I have included instructions above on how to do that.
  5. You can make regular pretzels out of this dough as well, just don't cut your ropes into little bites.
  6. Coarse sea salt is the best for topping these, do not use table salt.
  7. You can use instant yeast for this, just watch your rise as it will rise faster.
