Ingredients

  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 1 tablespoon minced green onion white part only
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon granulated sugar
  • 24 wonton wrappers
  • Peanut oil for frying
  • Sweet and sour sauce for serving

Instructions

  • In a medium sized bowl, add the cream cheese, green onion, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and sugar.
  • Mix together until fully combined.
  • Heat a deep fryer or dutch oven with 4 inches of oil to 375°F.
  • Place a small bowl of water on a clean work surface. Set a wonton wrapper on your station and dip your finger into the water, run your finger along the edge of the wrapper to moisten it.
  • Add about ½ tablespoon of the cream cheese filling to the center of the wrapper.
  • Fold the wrapper into four points, pressing the edges tightly together to seal making sure not to tear a hole or rip the wrappers.
  • Fry in batches about 4 wontons at a time until golden brown, about 4-5 minutes.
  • Place the finished wontons upside down on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
  • Immediately serve with sweet and sour sauce for dipping if desired.

Notes

  1. Feel free to use this as a base recipe to make crab rangoon, see my info on how to do that above.
  2. You can trade out the dipping sauce, see some other ideas above.
  3. This recipe makes quite a few wontons, but you can easily double it to make more.
  4. While frying these wontons, it's normal for some of the cheese filling to escape.
  5. Be sure to only use a little filling inside. The more you add, the more that can escape and get lost in the fryer.
  6. Don't use dumpling wrappers, they aren't the same as wonton wrappers, and will not come out the same way.
